I got this in a newsletter today from my friends at the GreenGirlGuide.com
They’ve been running an awesome little website about fashion-friendly eco-consciousness, but apparently national geographic thinks they own the use of the words green and guide…
T-Minus Five: Say Goodbye to Green Girl Guide
Say what? Yes, as of June 23rd (sniff) GreenGirlGuide.com will be no more. We didn’t want to say goodbye, but a few months ago National Geographic sent us a cease-and-desist letter because of a perceived conflict between our site and NatGeo’s TheGreenGuide.com (Who knew?) and suddenly, what started out as a side-project for three green-minded women suddenly turned into a David and Goliath story of epic proportions. With no resources to fight the geological giant, we’ve decided to part ways. But we’re not gone for good, oh no! Mia Wasilevich has some soon-to-be-announced projects coming up; Rachel Lincoln Sarnoff will launch www.ecostiletto.com on June 30th and she’s hired Courtney Owens Zielinski to design the site. And we’re still green girls, even if we’ll no longer be Green Girls. KIT, ‘kay?
I’m really sorry to see them having to do this, but kudos to them for being such good sports about it.
To National Geographic? SHAME ON YOU This website was no threat to you, nor could it in any way been misconstrued as being by or supported by you. This is an example of exactly what is wrong with the present state of the corporate world, marketing and branding. Ugh.
