DIY

Someone on the WhipUp forums touched on a topic that’s been dear to my heart as of late.

She wrote:

“There is a definite revival of DIY in our culture. It’s interesting a question as to how this all started. My belief is that it parallels the last revivial of DIY spirit in the 1970s.
At that time as well as today people felt disconnected, isolated, and desperate. People struggle to be heard especially in relationship to war and a repressive government. Art making of any kind is therapuetic and it restores our sense of empowerment. The DIY movement has been sparked by several different, maybe complimentary reasons:
the need for individuals to have an outlet.
the need to form community.
the need to access ones independence as a reflection of the ill equipped nature of the state.
the need to invest in the self.
the need for revolution.
the need for economic independence.
The nature of the DIY movement is thus to satisfy the retaliatory nature that arises when one feels repressed, isolated, and lacking the independence that every individual has a right to.”

Recently I was interviewed for a potential article about the resurgence of crafting, and while I know there are as many factors as there are crafters, some common themes just keep coming up. One of the biggies is the concept of craftivism, or the role of craft in changing the world we live in. In addition to what the above author has written about the empowering nature of craft, I think it’s also about wanting to know the real cost of an item- not just the cash you plunk down, but the political, human and environmental costs that are so often hidden when you buy from the shelves of a chain store. I think more and more people want to look a real person in the eye and have that connection, that realness of knowing who made the item they are about to buy. NoImpact Man calls it transparency, the author of the above quote calls it independence or rebellion, but whatever you call it, the fact that people are looking for it fills me with hope and happiness.

here’s another way!! 10 simple things you can do!

I Took The Handmade Pledge! BuyHandmade.org

So lately it’s been a little crazy around here. By a little, I mean, omg help! I need elves!

Here’s just a little of the “why”.

atlanta craft mafia logo

See that? Well, umm. I guess I can let the cat out of the bag now. The ladies who started the old Atlanta Craft Mafia decided they didn’t want to do it anymore. It’s a franchise sort of deal just like Dr Sketchy’s is, and when some friends looked into picking up the franchise and asked me to join, well how could I say no?? Becky, Liz and I are three crafters of the new 7 crafter Founding Family.

We sort of want to do things a little differently, we want to have members and offer more things like classes and more than one show. We also want to operate as an umbrella organization promoting and protecting our members, and we want to have a level of participation for non-crafting people who have an interest in promoting/appreciating the handmade lifestyle.
We’re still working out all the details, but so far we have a preliminary website, http://www.atlcraftmafia.com/
and we plan to have a meet-and-greet sometime in January or early February to reach out to all our fellow crafters who might want to join us on our mission to take over the world with handmade awesomeness.

Let’s see, what else? Oh yeah, the CHOMP N STOMP was amazing. I had a record day. The chili was unfrickingbelievable, and I actually got some this year! Alligator chili with jalapeno hush puppies??? omg. Green Veggie Chili??? omg… but the most amazing was the thai vegetarian chili with some sort of fake sourcream topping. I wish I knew who made it, it was unbelievable.

Next up for Supercute! will be a little indoor festival this saturday to help out one of our neighborhood schools. Indoors! Helps kids! How could we say no??
Once again, we’ll be neighboring with ScurvyDog Photography, so even if you don’t have kids, but just want to support a fabulous neighborhood school and get some early Xmas shopping done, MaryLin will be a good place to do it! Saturday, 11-5, in Candler Park.

I also decided to start keeping some knits in the Etsy shop. I’ll be posting things as I get them made over the next few days, even tho it means closing down the shop for each festival. Seems like I should keep a better representation of what I do in there tho, you know?

Two nifty products that are actually available in the states to help you get greener!

First: This new tank lid retrofits into your existing toilet to allow you to wash your hands with fresh water, which is then recycled for toilet flushing. This is pretty cool for older homes where re-doing your plumbing for greywater reclamation would be difficult.

The second one is a spinning composter. It’s compact, and breaks food down odorlessly into fertilizer in under three months. Wow. This is for sure going on my wish list for next year’s garden. I wonder if it’s available locally…

A couple weeks ago, I saw this chair on the side of the road. I had to circle back and go get it, because I thought it had nice bones.

It was covered in about a million badly-done coats of white paint, so I attacked it with some stripper. This stripper is so amazing: no fumes, no harsh chemicals, no headache… and an hour later, the paint practically fell off. I still need to go over it with some steel wool in the crevices, but so far it’s been a painless re-hab.

Speaking of chairs, a friend who is having a baby was clearing some things out of her house to make room for the new nursery. She had a pair of these chairs she no longer needed, and once again, I’ve scored something fabulous in return for teaching someone to sew. woo!!!!! I love barter!

Anyway, I should have taken a “before” shot, because they did look rather grandma-ish the way they were, but a couple hours with a staple remover and the frumpy skirts were gone, leaving another pair of chairs with very nice bones.

I do intend to eventually reupholster them. The original color was lovely, like the inside of a kiwi, but they’ve faded to an odd chartreuse. However, Lucie approves, for now.
